The Netherlands is a country built on water — a flat, luminous landscape of polders, windmills, and canal cities wrested from the sea over eight centuries. Amsterdam is the inevitable centrepiece — its UNESCO-listed canal ring of 17th-century merchant houses and narrow bridges is one of Europe's most atmospheric urban environments. The city's world-class museums — the Rijksmuseum, the Van Gogh Museum, and the Anne Frank House — could occupy days. Beyond Amsterdam, the waterways lead to medieval Leiden, The Hague, and the beautiful canal city of Delft, home of the celebrated blue-and-white pottery tradition.

Seasonal highlights include the Keukenhof tulip gardens — seven million flowers in bloom between March and May — and the Kinderdijk windmill complex, a UNESCO-listed network of 19 working windmills whose silhouettes against a cloud-streaked Dutch sky have become one of the country's most iconic images.
